Sylvia what do you mean? Selection of conferences to attend, or the concurrent session selection?
If concurrent sessions then I think one of the questions is: What's the purpose of the conference, and what's your purpose at the conference? I look at some conferences where the purpose of the concurrent sessions is to provide justification for the participants to attend, and to simultaneously pad their resumes. That means, for me, I'll go to sessions that may provide me with new information, but I don't expect to see many of those, and my purpose will be to network with other folks at the conference. I may also hit sessions of colleagues just to provide support and insure they have an audience.
Hi Ray,
Thanks for asking that question - I realize what I posted wasn't clear at all!
I was thinking about how session submissions are reviewed and accepted or rejected. These processes are done in ways that are not transparent at all, and mainly with a "that's how we've always done it" attitude. I keep hearing about how people want better sessions, but if the session selection process isn't questioned, not much will change.
Sylvia, not sure whether this discussion was continued in person somewhere, but one of the things I've always found interesting is that the system requires reviewers to post comments to the author(s) - it won't let you successfully submit without it. However, I'd say that at least a third of the proposals I've submitted to AACE conferences over the years have come back with no feedback at all beyond the raw scores. I've always wondered how that was possible?
